Pregnancy Diary Week 5: How Is Your Baby Growing?
At this point in time, your baby’s circulatory system and heart are developing. Your baby now looks like a tiny tadpole with a tail. It’s size could be as small as the seed of an orange. The embryonic tissues are forming rapidly into a heart. The heart begins to become functional and through an early ultrasound, you might be able to see it beating.
The neural tube also begins to develop. Later on, it will form into the baby’s spinal cord and brain. The brain develops into three primary sections, the forebrain, hindbrain and midbrain and each has its own corresponding functions later on.
What you can expect
Pregnancy symptoms such as frequent urination, breast tenderness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, excessive saliva, food aversion and food cravings are more likely to be experienced. Morning sickness should be expected but of course, there is a benefit in the occurrence of this universal symptom. It reduces your risk for miscarriage.
Excessive saliva, nausea and vomiting should be blamed to those pregnancy hormones. Nausea and vomiting can be controlled by maintaining a healthy diet. Never attempt to skip meals as it can trigger nausea and vomiting.
At this stage, many pregnant women start to develop cravings for certain types of foods. In some cases, pregnant women tend to develop a particular liking to combinations of certain foods. On the other hand, some pregnant women tend to dislike foods which in normal circumstances, they would love to eat. This phenomenon can also be blamed on your hormones.
The emotional and hormonal changes during this period may require an additional amount of energy. The body is working hard due to the changes that are taking place inside plus dealing with the surge of pregnancy hormones. In effect, fatigue can be expected.
Progesterone and oestrogen should also be blamed for the tender and ultra-sensitive sensations in your breasts. Also, there is an increased flow of blood to your breasts which help your breast turn into machines that produce milk. Increased and frequent urination should also be expected. There is also an increase in the flow of blood to your kidneys and pelvic area to make them more efficient during this stage.

Meanwhile, its Vitamin C content safeguards pregnant women from having common colds. Broccoli is also rich in folic acid which reduces your baby’s risk for neural tube defects like spina bifida. On the other hand, its iron content is beneficial in increasing the volume of your blood. An insufficient amount of iron in the body can increase your risk for anemia.
Eating broccoli at this stage reduces your baby’s risk for birth damages. This cruciferous vegetable contains high level of antioxidants which are beneficial in promoting efficient blood circulation into the placenta. It also facilitates in the sufficient and efficient distribution of nutrients and oxygen to the baby’s brain. It even helps in protecting the embryo against micro-traumas.
