Pregnancy Diary Week by Week

Pregnancy Week 38 - How Is Your Baby Growing?

At pregnancy week 38, your unborn baby has gained a significant amount of weight. Weighing about 6.8 pounds and around 19 1/2 inches long. She has a strong grip, which you’ll soon feel when you hold her hand for the first time! Her organs are developed and are prepared for life outside the womb.

Your baby has most likely lost all the fine, downy hair and defensive white vernix from their skin at this time.

By 38 weeks pregnant, you are considered full term and your baby’s features are now totally developed.

Pregnancy Week 38 - What You Can Expect

For the majority women, the final weeks are a waiting game. Utilize this time by putting the finishing touches on your baby’s nursery or finishing needed jobs that will be postponed for a while after your baby’s born. Relax, read, take naps, and spend quality time with your partner while you’re able.

Your child continues to utilize glucose from your bloodstream so you may feel run down from hypoglycemia or blood sugar. Have a plethora of healthy on hand to help maintain your glucose level.

In the final weeks before labour you may observe an increase in vaginal discharge. If you develop a discharge which contains mucus and some blood, this is known as the “show” when you lose the jelly-like cervix plug.

At 38 weeks pregnant diarrhea is not uncommon as your body prepares for the birth. This diarrhea aids in making your child’s birth easier, however, if it persists for more than 24 hours contact your doctor.

Slight swelling in your feet and ankles is commonplace during the last weeks. However, if this swelling is extreme or sudden contact your GP immediately. This excessive swelling in hands, feet, ankles, around your eyes or face or sudden weight gain can be sign of pre-eclampsia.

Some other symptoms of this disease to be aware of are headaches that won’t go away, changes in vision such as double or blurred vision, seeing flashing lights or spots, sensitivity to light or temporary loss of vision and also abdominal tenderness and pain, nausea and vomiting. Again if any of these signs appear in pregnancy weeks 38 contact your doctor immediately.
